What a great weekend!

On Friday evening, John and I did some shopping for our weekly groceries while Thomas attended his martial arts class.  Chris was around we we got home – enjoying his NEW COMPUTER.  He’s having a lot of fun with it and it is everything he hoped for and more.  In fact, he was a little obnoxious with the bragging.  We all ate a pizza from Rosati’s together and watch Casino Royale.  Actually some watched and some slept in the chair.  Ooops!

On Saturday, John and I began our day with our usual coffee date, this time at Panera so we could pick up a couple of items at the nearby Walmart afterwards.  Then we went home, did some chores and got ready for Dave and Kelly’s visit.  They arrived with Otis in tow at about noon.  We took them to our favorite downtown place for lunch, wandered the shops a little and then headed over to Urbana for a driving tour of the old neighborhood.  We ended the day with a light supper at our house, followed by Buster Bar dessert.  Yum!  Chris had a couple of friends over for Rock Band and a movie, but Thomas, John and I headed for bed.

Today was a great church service with a really good sermon.  We were all set to invite someone to join us for breakfast afterwards, but we just didn’t run into the “right” people.  No one seemed to fit or be available so we headed out on our own to Atlanta Bread where we ran into a delightful couple we know from church.  We were pleased to sit down to breakfast with them as they also have children who are world travelers and have studied in interesting places.  They are a little farther down the road than we are though and so it’s great to hear their stories, both successes and struggles.

After our visit, we headed home to meet the boys then shortly thereafter headed out to the Gifford parade.  This year there were no concessions or any other attractions, just a simple parade that lasted about 20 minutes.  It was actually kind of disappointing until I started watching the group of young cousins next to us.  All girls in the age 2-4 bracket, they were thoroughly delighted by the tractors, fire engines and politicians who tossed handfuls of hard candy, lollipops and tootsie rolls their way.  There were no clever floats such as the year of the “root beer float” but watching these young fans made the event a winner.  We then went out to the farm where Mom had fixed among other things, a delicious batch of potato salad.  Her Gifford parade day potato salad is a culinary high light of my year.

We dropped the boys in Champaign on our way to Bloomington where we met dear old friends Kevin and Linda for dinner.  Dinner was delicious and the conversation was delightful.  We stayed and stayed and stayed til finally the waitress figured us out and stopped refilling things.  Eventually, we had to go.  We did make one stop on the way out of town at the Krispy Kreme shop to bring our boys a hot dozen.  I wonder if we had them in our town if we would love them so much.

On the ride home, I was “peopled out.”  No matter how wonderful the people, too many of them make me tired!  I told John I’d being staying up until midnight just to have time alone to unwind from the many conversations I had today.  But again I emphasize, it was a delightful day.

The list for the week ahead is long.  Thomas is grudgingly getting started on his summer reading assignment and Chris will be plowing head first in to RYE prep this week.  We will resume tomorrow morning with checking things of the list.  But for now, time for some peaceful, quiet time with my good friend – random TV!  Good night!

Getting ready to dig in and tackle another week.  Chris is already off to his early job and John is almost to leave.  Thomas is asleep and probably will be for a while.  When I was home on Friday, he got up about 11:30.  Ahhh, the joys of summer before you are old enough for gainful employment!

Today we will most likely get our dryer fixed after an attempt on Friday, only to discover the repairman didn’t have the right parts and the trouble was a little more extensive.  Isn’t that always the way?  So we will get that fixed and today also the dumpster from our roof project will be hauled away.  We have a new roof with only a couple of days of chaos, so not too bad.  Only one problem to report and that is that the tarps they used seemed to have had some sort of weedkiller on them.  We have large patches of dead grass and damage to many flowers and bushes.  The roofing company denies this and blames it on over heating by the sun through the tarp.  But since the damage is in spots and on very hardy bushes, I think not.  Oh well, hopefully they will grow back.

Fun events of the weekend past included an evening at Taste of Champaign with friends from church and birthday part for Lucas who turned nine.  Even though it had a Cubs theme, it was still pleasant.  Ha.  Thomas ate a hot dog at the party.  First carnivorous experience since babyhood, and he chose something packed with nitrites and various parts of various animals.    I believe that was Kate’s choice as well.  It’s a start – courageous culinary branching out.

In the week ahead:

small – daisies should bloom and there will be hundreds of them, at least those that weren’t damaged by the Roundup-laden roofer tarps.

bigger – thinking about my career path

big – Dave and Kelly come to visit on Saturday and we will be happy to see them and spend the day with them on Saturday.

Today is a perfectly beautiful day to live in central Illinois.  I’m off to enjoy!

There is a very large dumpster in our driveway.  I just barely managed to get my car out of the garage before the dumpster drop off drive deposited it.  It’s huge.

We are getting a new roof and this is why we have the dumpster.  It’s not a very exciting expenditure, but seems it is necessary to preserve the integrity of our structure and the dryness of our ceilings.  I’d rather buy pretty furniture.

It was a big day at work for me today, the annual Council for Volunteerism retreat.  All went well – speakers good, weather good, lunch good.

Our dryer is broken and needs a new motor.  We can only run very light loads.  With boys who wear lots of jeans and use tons of towels, this is not easy.  We will muddle through until Tuesday or Wednesday when we will get it fixed.

I am jumbled up in my feelings about my job.  Yesterday I realized that John has earned what I earn in an entire year by Valentines Day.  And yet I am sacrificing much time, energy, and family sanity to this work.  Wondering about a better way to contribute to the common good.

I am sick with a sore throat and a hot and achy feeling, not a good time to make decisions or dinner.  We are going to Sonic.  A frosty diet limeade is just what the doctor order.

Oh, and I really miss Kate.

Oh, and Thomas tackled the mowing today and did an awesome job without being reminded or complaining.  Get the guy a milkshake!

Yesterday we had a great party in honor of Christian’s high school graduation. It was fun to see friends from our old neighborhood, friends from the town we used to live in, church friends, and family. Lots of Chris’ friends from school came by. Lots of people (I’m guessing 60 based on paper plate usage!) and the food was good, timing worked out, all was well. I had a lot of help getting ready and John handled all the cooking. We had a simple, but delicious, menu and hardly any leftovers. The entire cake was gone! Clean up was pretty easy and after the kids all cleared out about 10:30, we crashed.

Today was kids’ worship day at church, about patience. We needed it for that service which, although done with excellence, was geared entirely to families with young children.  After church we met up with some friends for breakfast at Flat Top Grill, which we agreed was fun and tasty.  Just taking it easy since then.  It’s nice to have the graduation events behind us and I am looking forward to a simpler, more slow pace for at least the next couple of weeks.
